The Irish sing about “Cockles and Mussels, alive, alive, oh!” Frequently served steamed with vinegar and bread they are eaten with gusto. Intriguingly, while still a popular shellfish in England & Ireland, they have never caught on in the USA as Oysters and Clams have; as they are smaller, chewier, and have a more earthy briny flavor. Using shell shapes for holloware is nothing new. Belleek created the Neptune pattern in the 1870’s which is also built on the Cockle shell form. Queen Victoria’s preferred Belleek pattern, “Echinus” is based on the sea urchin. Online research seems to indicate a date of October 13, 1883. I have seen this particular body with coral and seaweed handle and spout with gold substituting for the blue. The cockle shell finial on the lid is an extra cute touch.
