Mintons China Works Aesthetic Blue and White Tile 6” Crazing Dimensions: 6” Square ¼” Thick Condition: Staining and Crazing throughout Markings: Stoke on Trent Globe with Minton Walebrook London Mintons China Works Stoke On Trent Mintons China Works built most of England, providing numerous products from sewage pipes to the finest porcelain. This 6 inch tile is from their heavy dty tile line and likely was used on a fireplace hearth or mantle piece. The blue transfer designs show a swallow in flight and a swamp lily emerging from the pond. Using a classic Japanese design motif of asymmetrical geometric hexagonal diaper patterns (resembling traditional Japanese kikko or tortoise-shell motifs) the tile earns its Japonism Aesthetic Stripes. It also appears to reference the Delft tiles of the era. In spite of the somewhat rough condition, this is a nice example and excellent for a study collection.
