Description

H & K Late Wedgwood Aesthetic Japonesque Polychrome Earthenware Plate 1882. Hollinshead & Kirkham began in 1870 and started in Tunstall in 1876, where it would stay until its closure in 1956. It is in no way related to the noted Josiah Wedgwood Ceramic Works. The plate is very heavy and was confusing as I initially thought it was an anomaly from Josiah Wedgwood. H & K Late Wedgwood Aesthetic Japonesque Polychrome Dinner Plate 1882 Dimensions: 10 ½” in Diameter Condition: Very Good, Minimal Crazing, gilding and colors fresh and clean. Markings: Impressed: H & K Late Wedgwood English Registry Diamond: C = January 30 = Day L = 1882 Hollinshead & Kirkham began in 1870 and started in Tunstall in 1876, where it would stay until its closure in 1956. In 1890 H&K purchased Wedgwood & Co. [ Alias Unicorn Pottery] and to assert their ownership, they came up with the name “Late Wedgwood”. It is in no way related to the noted Josiah Wedgwood Ceramic Works. This name was used from 1890- 1900. The plate is very heavy and was confusing as I initially thought it was an anomaly from Josiah Wedgwood. This plate it earthenware, continuing the Wedgwood & Co reputation for easy chipping. Remarkably there are none on this plate. So, though it is not by Josiah, the polychrome transfer decorations are wonderful Japonism. The image of a Boshu uchiwa fan is outlined in gold decorated with wisteria and a butterfly. The gold framed center image is of a two masted schooner and a tiny inset shows a Japanese fishing boat. Unifying the design is a couple of sprigs of English Ivy. Random insets of images are common in Edo and Meiji woodblock prints. A particularly handsome example of Japonism from a potter whose lineage is confusing at best that will enhance any Aesthetic Japonesque collection.
