Pair of Choisy-Le-Roi Gold Majolica Belle Epoque Japonism Plates 1878. Pair of Choisy-Le-Roi Gold Belle Epoque Japonism Walking with an Umbrella Plates 4 and 5. One shows a fly fisherman by a pond reaching to grab his caught fish. The other one shows a person fishing off the crescent moon while another person is walking away. Markings: #4: The standard Hautin & Boulanger Cie Choisy le Roi mark #5: The standard Hautin & Boulanger Cie Choisy le Roi mark Majolica is a less expensive form of pottery which takes well to bright and colorful glazes. Unfortunately, it is also pretty brittle and cracks easily. Both of these are examples of “angels with dirty faces”. These wonderful examples of Japonism are distinguished by their caramel color. One shows a fly fisherman by a pond reaching to grab his caught fish. The other one shows a person fishing off the crescent moon while another person is walking away. A clematis vine curves up on the right side. It is alleged that this series of plates was designed for the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris.
