Condition: Excellent; light age toning, sharp ink contrast, and intact margins. Original printed financial receipt dated July 8, 1850, issued by the Hartford and New Haven Railroad Company and signed by M. L. Sikes Jr. This document records the payment of $2,200.00, written in full as “Twenty Two Hundred Dollars,” for company disbursements. Printed on fine, off-white paper stock, the form features a decorative engraved border along the left margin, shaded boxes for both the amount and receipt number (No. 223), and bold black typography identifying the railroad company. All other details are neatly filled in with brown ink in elegant period handwriting. The reverse carries a manuscript notation repeating the date, name, and amount — likely used as a record for internal bookkeeping. The Hartford & New Haven Railroad, chartered in 1833 and completed by the mid-1840s, was one of New England’s earliest and most strategically important rail lines, linking Connecticut’s capital with its deep-water port at New Haven. Receipts such as this were issued during its early operational years to track company disbursements and expenditures — authentic remnants of the railroad’s formative financial history. Condition: Excellent; light age toning, sharp ink contrast, and intact margins.
