Transcription This receipt was originally printed for use by the Newburgh, Dutchess & Connecticut Railroad (ND&C RR), a line incorporated in 1866 and completed by 1871, running from Newburgh (on the Hudson River) eastward across Dutchess County toward Connecticut. By the late 1870s, the ND&C had absorbed or jointly operated the Clove Branch Railroad, a small coal and iron-hauling line that extended from Lagrangeville Junction to Clove Valley, NY (about 16 miles southeast of Poughkeepsie). The overstrike “CLOVE BRANCH RAIL ROAD” shows that this particular payroll form—originally printed for the parent ND&C—was reused after consolidation for the smaller branch’s employees. At this date (November 1879), the line was still nominally independent but already under control of ND&C management.
