Dale London, Serial No. 7164, Circa 1780 - Gilded Bullion Case For sale is a genuine 18th-century English verge fusee pocket watch by J. Dale, London, with serial number 7164. This is a classic Georgian-era timepiece dating to around 1780. The watch is not currently working, but the fusee chain is intact and in place. It would benefit greatly from a professional cleaning and service — a great project watch for a collector or enthusiast. Key Features: Movement: Traditional fusee verge escapement with ornate pierced and engraved fire-gilded brass plates. Beautifully decorated balance cock with foliate and scroll engraving. Clearly signed “J. Dale LONDON” and stamped with serial number 7164. Dial: White enamel dial with black Roman numerals and blued steel hands. Shows age-appropriate crazing and light surface marks. Case: Heavy bullion / pair case with hallmarks including the Lion Passant. Engine-turned (guilloché) decoration on the back with a central circular cartouche containing script monogram “J P”. Ribbed band, functional hinge, and bow. Crystal is intact. Size: Approx. 50-55mm diameter (standard full-size gentleman’s pocket watch). Condition: This is an authentic 245+ year old antique sold as-is. The movement is complete with the fusee chain correctly in place, but the watch is not running and will require servicing. Case shows honest wear, patina, and minor scratches consistent with its age. Overall a solid and attractive example of early London watchmaking with lovely original engraving and gilding. Ideal for restoration, display, or as part of a collection of English verge watches. These pieces showcase the craftsmanship of the period before the widespread adoption of the lever escapement.
