Obi Deigns are used for the outer border, Pomegranates, Plum Blossoms, and Bamboo insets. Separating these on three sides is a circle with a cross. This particular design is the mon [seal] for the Satsuma clan, which was displayed on their battle flags. It is from this that the pattern derives its name. The center continues the Japanese theme with more fabric designs, roses, and a fan with tiny birds on a plum branch. As if this isn’t enough, the piece is slathered with caramel lustre.
