Markings: Robinson & Leadbetter logo Tokio This Robinson and Leadbetter cake plate is likely from the 1880s, at the height of the Japonism Craze. What makes this pattern extraordinary is the incredible variety of “fabric” pattern on the plate. There are flowers, plaids, a spider web, and numerous designs. Note, there are four pieces of this crazy quilt which show a typical Victorian good luck symbol, taken from the Far East, the ancient swastika. The pattern name is Tokio, the spelling difference is understandable, the Japanese changed the name from Edo to Tokyo in 1868 under the new Meiji emperor, so it was a new name at the time. Did I mention the crazy quilt? The origins of the crazy quilt rest with Japan, and when the Japonism craze example such as this began to appear, they easily translated to the home quilter where they provided colorful warmth for families everywhere.
