This wonderful example of Japonism is distinguished by its moss green color with an inset that creates an illusion. The woman is blowing bubbles within the frame, but the bubbles escape the frame only to explode and become birds. In the theater we describe this as breaking the fourth wall. The background is a sprig of magnolia, a popular plant in Japonesque circles. Scholarship suggests that Hautin Boulanger made these for the 1878 Exposition Universelle held in Paris to celebrate the recovery of France from earlier internal troubles.
