1850 Hartford and New Haven Railroad Payment Receipt M. L. Sikes Jr. $3,500. All key entries — date, amount, and signature — are neatly handwritten in brown ink in an elegant 19th-century hand. Condition: Excellent; crisp paper, clear printed text and handwriting, minor toning from age. Original printed financial receipt dated July 3, 1850, issued by the Hartford and New Haven Railroad Company, and signed by M. L. Sikes Jr. Acknowledges receipt of $3,500.00, written as “Thirty Five Hundred Dollars” for disbursements. Printed on early cream paper with fine left-hand ornamental engraving and decorative shaded boxes for both the amount and receipt number (No. 219). The type is clean and crisp, with the company name boldly printed in serif capitals. All key entries — date, amount, and signature — are neatly handwritten in brown ink in an elegant 19th-century hand. Reverse bears the notation: “M. L. Sikes Jr., Rec’d July 3, 1850, 3500” — a likely internal accounting mark verifying the transaction. This receipt represents the Hartford & New Haven Railroad’s active mid-century financial operations during the expansion of Connecticut’s rail network.
