1848 Hartford and New Haven Railroad Payment Receipt M. L. Sikes Jr. $3,500. Handwritten details in brown ink include the date, amount, and signature of M. L. Sikes Jr., who was a known official and accountant with the line during the 1840s. The reverse side contains a period notation: “M. L. Sikes Jr. Original printed financial receipt dated May 3, 1848, issued by the Hartford and New Haven Railroad Company, and signed by M. L. Sikes Jr. The document acknowledges receipt of $3,500.00, written as “Thirty five hundred Dollars,” for company disbursements. This is a very early example of Hartford & New Haven Railroad financial documentation — Receipt No. 2, suggesting it was among the first in this numbered series of forms used by the company’s financial office. Printed on fine off-white paper with a bold left-hand ornamental border, shaded boxes for the dollar amount and receipt number, and clean serif typography for the railroad’s name. Handwritten details in brown ink include the date, amount, and signature of M. L. Sikes Jr., who was a known official and accountant with the line during the 1840s.
