AMASA DAVIS was born in 1745 and was known to have participated in the Boston Tea Party. He entered the Revolutionary War to become the quartermaster of one of the Boston Regiments. He died in 1825. Davis paid the freight for ammunition as evidenced in this document. 2 pp, front and back, 6 1/4 x 8 1/4, Commonwealth of Massachusetts receipt, May 1, 1817 To Aaron Staniford. “I’m pleas[ed] to pay the Bearer the within bill, Six Dollars to the freight of the Ammunition for the Battalion of Artillery 2d Brigade 12th Division…you will oblige your Humble Servant “Portland, May 16, 1817 “Phinehas Varnum, Major, Battalion of Artillery 2nd Brigade 12th Division” Verso reads: “To Aaron Staniford “May 1, 1817 “To freighting ammunition from Boston to Portland for the battalion of artillery, 2d Brigade, 12th Division, commanded by Major Phinehas Varnum $6.00 Portand Received Payment in full. “Boston, May 30, 1817, Received of Amasa Davis, Qr. Mr. Gen’l. Six dollars in full for above. A Staniford” Folds. Toning. Maine was part of Massachusetts until 1820 when it would become a state.
