The book contains 17 detailed tours. These traverse the state in all directions, pointing out special features and historic sites along the way. Mississippi, A Guide to the Magnolia State, is a hard cover 1949 printing of the 1938 book, which was part of the American Guide Series. These books, produced during the Great Depression era to help unemployed journalists, were compiled by the Federal Writers Project of the Works Progress Administration. There are numerous photos and maps throughout the 545 text and reference pages. Included is a 9-section road map at the back of the book. A Calendar of annual events precedes a review Mississippi ’s history as viewed through various aspects: Natural Setting, Transportation, E ducation, Religion. Arts, Music, Agriculture,Newspapers, Folklore, etc.. A section is devoted to each of these cities: Biloxi, Columbus, Greenwood, Gulfport, Holly Springs, Jackson, Laurel, Meridian, Natchez, Oxford, Tupelo and Vicksburg. The book contains 17 detailed tours. These traverse the state in all directions, pointing out special features and historic sites along the way.
