Minton “Jaffa” Aesthetic Japonesque Dinner Plate Basketweave 1885 Choice Dimensions: 10 ¼” in Diameter Condition: Very very good, delicate crazing over all. Markings: Minton Globe with banner reading JAFFA Pattern number C3170 E.. Impressed: Mark for 1885 D 4 Partial English Registry Diamond D in black glaze Description: While many English potters referenced Japanese ceramics, Minton actually copied them. Examples of Minton are direct copies of Hizen and Aritaware. This piece copies and references notable Imari examples. Many of these were brought back to England by Dr. Christopher Dresser in 1876. Aside from the body being scalloped, Minton also added a band of basketweave just above the bowl. The lighter cinnabar flowers and leaves are also glazed with caramel luster. This plate was not made for the lower middle class. While I have a number of desert plates in the scalloped chrysanthemum body, I have only seen this one with the basket weave adornment.
