Item Overview: Available is a rare and historically significant Autograph Document Signed (ADS) dated November 1797, regarding the construction and repair of the Dighton Meeting House in Massachusetts. The "Washington Connection": This document features the extensive handwriting and signature of Hodijah Baylies (1756–1843). Baylies was a distinguished officer in the Continental Army and served as an Aide-de-Camp to General George Washington from 1782 to 1783. He was present at the British surrender at Yorktown. Documents in Baylies’ own hand are highly sought after by collectors of Washington’s "military family." Document Details: • Signatures: Signed by Hodijah Baylies and John Hathway. • Content: A fascinating, itemized ledger for building materials and labor provided by Colonel Silvester Richmond. • Itemized Entries include: Transporting "shingels" and timber from the river/wharf, "nail from the forge," use of a "Grine Stone," and general supervision of repairs. • Provenance/Poignancy: The document concludes with a receipt signed by William Richmond, who accepted payment "for my Father Sylvester Richmond," who passed away the same year this work was completed.
