This is a remarkable item for sale. Original 1787 New York court manuscript writ referencing Chancellor Robert R. Livingston and signed “Lewis” & “Hamilton Atty” The document appears to relate to a legal action involving Thomas Bibby and Nicholas Bayard, two individuals connected to the commercial and legal networks of post-Revolutionary New York. SIGNATURES: The Hamilton signature is almost certainly written by a clerk or the individual who signed “Lewis”. The Lewis Signature (and the entire writ) may very well be by Morgan Lewis, but I can not be certain and cannot authenticate it. Historical Context During the late 1780s the New York legal system was dominated by a small circle of prominent attorneys and judges, including Alexander Hamilton, Morgan Lewis, and Chancellor Robert R. Livingston. Morgan Lewis was an active New York attorney during this period and later became: • Attorney General of New York (1791–1792) • Governor of New York (1804–1807) • Major General in the War of 1812 The signature “Lewis” on this document closely resembles known examples of Morgan Lewis’s handwriting from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. While not definitively authenticated, the handwriting style and legal context strongly suggest that this document may be in his handwriting. ***Can not confirm that though!!!*** Below is a rough transcription: The People of the State of New York to Richard Morris Esquire Chief Justice Robert Yates and John Sloss Hobart Esquires Justices of our Supreme Court of Judicature Greeting Whereas Thomas Bibby by Bill without our Writ lately in our said Court impleaded Nicholas Bayard and Stephen N. Bayard in a certain Plea of Debt and by the consideration of our said Court two thousand six hundred and twelve Pounds were adjudged to the said Thomas Bibby for his Debt aforesaid as also eight Pounds six shillings and three Pence for his Damages which he sustained as well by Reason of detaining his said Debt as for his Costs and Charges by him expended about his Suit in that Behalf And whereas Execution of that Judgment you have hitherto deferred to make to the no small Damage and Expense of the said Thomas Bibby as from his Complaint we have learned And we being willing that Execution should in such Manner be any longer delayed in this Behalf do command and you firmly enjoining you that Execution of the Judgment aforesaid without Delay you cause to be made Witness Robert R.
