Description

A Daily Dose of Minor Pentatonics for Improvisation - Bass Clef I. The use of pentatonics in improvisation is a long-standing tradition that runs the gamut of musical styles and genres. When played generically as eighth notes, the interval structure implies a chord outline but with enough step wise motion to maintain linear direction. When the scale is started on the downbeat, the minor third intervals create a natural off-beat accent that is inherent to a contemporary swing style. Pentatonics are easily permutated into attractive symmetrical and sequential melodic shapes that in many cases have become recognizable cliches. As a scale that doesn’t distinctly define a specific harmony, multiple harmonic situations can be negotiated with a single well understood pentatonic. The exercises in this text are intended to develop technique, fluency and awareness of melodic possibility with minor pentatonics in all keys.
