APTIS was the Accountancy and Passenger Ticket Issuing System, mainstream machines were used on the British Rail/National Rail network from October 1986 until June 2007, a wide variety of printed cards was used. Decoding the bottom line of a typical ticket: 40029 - serial number of ticket 3611 - serial number of machine 1536M03 - 1536 = National Location Code for Luton Station (still current) 1536M03 - M03 = London Midland Region + ticket window 3 at station
