Beliefs, Motivations and Perceptions Author(s): Kelly O'Reilly Format: Hardback Publisher: Taylor & Francis Ltd, United Kingdom Imprint: Routledge ISBN-13: 9780415855525, 978-0415855525 Synopsis This book offers a novel approach to understanding the puzzle of nuclear proliferation by examining how leaders beliefs and perceptions about the international system influence states' decisions to acquire nuclear weapons. Today, there is a persisting dilemma over the spread of nuclear weapons for both practitioners and scholars of international affairs. Uncertainty remains whether determined proliferators can be stopped, as shown by the cases of North Korea and Iran. These instances of proliferation raise questions about regional stability, the use of pre-emptive military action, and the potential for reactive-proliferation by neighbouring countries. Despite the serious implications surrounding the spread of these weapons, proliferation scholarship has thus far failed to solve what has been described as the "proliferation puzzle"- why do some countries choose nuclear weapons while others do not? The author argues that understanding basic psychological motivations, such as the role of power and perceptions of self and others, forms a strategic context which provides answers about a leaders willingness to proliferate. Proliferation willingness is a critical, yet frequently overlooked, part of the proliferation equation. Ultimately, it is the combination of willingness and proliferation opportunity ([url] technical and scientific capabilities) that determines whether a country 'goes nuclear'. By examining several historical instances of proliferation decision-makingin South Africa, India, Libya and Australiathe book's findings highlight the fundamental role of leaders beliefs in shaping proliferation outcomes. This book will be of much interest to students of nuclear proliferation, political psychology, security studies and IR in general.

  1. Good seller, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ item as described, packaging average, delivery was a huge disappointment as it was thrown at my front door by an AMAZON driver. I purchased via eBay to avoid AMAZON, now they are involved leaving our eBay purchases on our doorsteps. I do have cctv of the driver throwing my package. I brought the poor delivery to the attention of the seller who advised they would contact the delivery organisation concerned about the breach in their delivery instructions.

    Relatively Uncertain
  2. This new book I ordered was poorly packaged & arrived in a cardboard wrap which was wide open & the pages had bent & damaged corners. I contacted the seller who sent a return label & arranged for a new replacement to be sent out. The new book arrived in great condition a few days later. Very happy with their communication & the way they resolved my issue quickly. I wouldn't hesitate to shop with them again. Thank you for the great customer service.

  3. It seems silly being asked to leave feedback 3 times for 3 books bought in the same order so 'copy and paste' it is... Ordered Friday and delivered the following Friday. Communicayion was good but the courier was a bit optimistic saying on Thursday that I would get the parcel that day. It arrived the next afternoon. Good packaging, all books new and excelllent condition. Good prices = or I would not have purchased!
