Description
Early steel puzzle savings bank made by the A. W. Williams Company Van Nest NY. Advertising the Wiler & Wise as “The brightest spot in town” and ‘The Busy Beehive’ this bank comes with a machined pressure key. The lock in the front that looks like a key hole but has no lock mechanism as this key hole is meant to distract. The real lock is in the bottom whereby the machined key (which is shown) is screwed into the hole. I took a picture of the mechanism in the lid from the side. Best guess would be the machined key continues to push down on a metal button and this pressure is enough to open the door. The machine key may also be a master key to further encourage savings by not allowing access. There is some very slight prying around the fake key hole in the front. Best guess on age late 1800’s.
