Receipt of payment Lancaster canal John Sparks John Davis June 1837 Erie canal. Here is a piece from the early days of United States. It is written by John Davis to John Sparks and is a receipt of payment for 19 dollars and 25 cents which comes out to 38-1/2 days wages at 50 cents per day. They were apparently building the canal through Lancaster at that time and he was one of the laborers. it appears to be on laid paper but not as distinct and earlier paper. It translates as follows. June 11 1837 Received of John Sparks in full nineteen dollars and twenty five cents for 38-1/2 days work on the Lancaster Canal at 50 cents pur day by me John Davis.
