Kashmir region of India has an old tradition of beautiful hand crafted items and this pillow cover is a fine example of that. Silk thread is used for its incredibly intricate chain stitch embroidery. Chain Stitch Embroidery which is also called “Ari”* work in Kashmir is done using a hook rather than a needle. The base fabric of the pillow cover is unbleached thick cotton. The embroidery is so intricate that not even an inch of base fabric is visible though out the stitches. Kashmir is famous for its finest quality chain stitch embroidery in the world. The embroidery is done on thick cotton cloth in a way that the base fabric is not visible at all through the stitches. Silk or Wool thread is used for the embroidery. The thread is passed through the ari, hooked needle, and is always held under the fabric to be embroidered and the hook is used to pull surface of the fabric. Small stitches are used to cover the entire area; the background is done in a single color, made up of a series of concentric circles which provide sense of flow to the design. The patterns are usually linear abstractions of the local flora, with the outlines worked first and the forms filled in later. Note: Only pillow covers are for sale, pillows are not included. This is a very nice coaster, its design is delicate, the coaster is sturdy, it was packaged securely, as described, I like it.
Decent quality for the price. Stitching isn't great and the silk isn't smooth, but it is gorgeous for sure
