Description

Ship's Company, Lonnie Coleman, 1957 Gay Pulp, 1st pap ed. Nice Condition, Dell. Lonnie Coleman is one of my favorite authors. He lived from 1920 to 1982 and wrote several incredibly good gay books. It's entry number 727 in Ian Young's The Male Homosexual in Literature: A Bibliography. Ship's Company by Lonnie Coleman was published for the first time in paperback By Dell in January, 1957. This copy is of that first paperback printing. The stock number is D185. It's a book of related short stories with two of them being gay, one about lesbians and the other, "The Theban Warriors", about a VERY gay guy named Montgomery who has just arrived about the ship. He's flamey and campy, but he's also a boxer and can beat up anybody, so he wins respect. The guy he's after is the narrator of the story. It's astonishing to have such a positive, out character twelve years before Stonewall. Lonnie Coleman is one of my favorite authors. Lonnie was his nickname---his legal name was William Lawrence, and he was basically never in the closet. He lived from 1920 to 1982 and wrote several incredibly good gay books. There's a wonderful chapter on Lonnie in The Golden Age of Gay Fiction edited by Drewey Gunn, where Ship's Company has six different entries. Coleman and Ship's Company are discussed on pages 100 and 101 of Drewey Gunn's Gay American Novels, 1870-1970. It's entry number 727 in Ian Young's The Male Homosexual in Literature: A Bibliography. The cover is very 1950's in that the background yellow of the painting goes all the way to the edge. The use of lots of white space came in with the 1060's. The handsome guy has got the sleeves of his white tee-shirt rolled up and pushed up, showing off more of his arms. His buns are also shown very nicely in his very tight blue jeans. That seems to be where the nurse is looking. The painting is signed in the lower left and it looks like Schaare. The book is stored & will be shipped in a polypropylene bag. I will combine shipping to reduce the cost. Let me know if you are bidding on more than one book. It will be shipped via Media Mail from Hawaii, which is sometimes quick, but it can take between 6 to 8 weeks.
