Description

Fumio Fujita — "Yūbae C / Evening Glow" Woodblock, 8/200, 1972. The signature & edition: Pencil-signed "F. Fujita" with Japanese title 夕映えC, dated 1972, edition 8/200 — all in the lower margin in the artist's hand. Edition 8/200, 1972 — mature mid-career Fujita (age 39), before the edition-size inflation that affected later Japanese printmakers in the 1980s–90s. A 1972 Fumio Fujita woodblock from his signature winter-trees series — multi-block color printing with the wood-grain texture of the block itself used as a compositional element, a technique inherited from Munakata Shikō. "Evening Glow C" layers five separately carved blocks to set bare tree silhouettes against a snowy landscape with a horizontal sunset band breaking through the branches. The work: Color woodblock print with cement-block embossing and hand-applied pigments on Japanese washi paper. Edition 8/200, 1972 — mature mid-career Fujita (age 39), before the edition-size inflation that affected later Japanese printmakers in the 1980s–90s. Five identifiable block layers from gray wood-grain ground through the yellow sunset band to the black tree silhouettes. The signature & edition: Pencil-signed "F. Fujita" with Japanese title 夕映えC, dated 1972, edition 8/200 — all in the lower margin in the artist's hand. "C" designates the third composition in the Yūbae (Evening Glow) group; Fujita commonly produced A/B/C variants of the same subject. The provenance: Self-carved, self-printed sōsaku-hanga — the movement that insisted the artist do everything from design through carving through printing. Fujita trained under Unichi Hiratsuka, one of the movement's founders. Condition: Image clean with no foxing, staining, or light-fade. Light marginal toning near the signature panel consistent with washi paper of this age — standard for the material and not marked down by specialist collectors. Fujita's work is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, MFA Boston, Portland Art Museum, and the British Museum. Second-generation sōsaku-hanga with institutional collector validation, not a decorative-market printmaker. Included: Print on Japanese washi paper, matted. Frame not included.
