Elias Wirtham, a physician and surgeon, owns a biological research firm motivated by his brother Joshua's death from a rare condition. He learns that a cure existed but was not distributed due to lack of profitability. Determined to combat corporate greed, Elias replaces his heart with a beta-particle reactor, enhancing his physical abilities and adopting the name "Cardiac" as a nod to his power source. Also we get the first appearance of the deranged sociopath known as Cletus Cassidy destined to become the one and only Carnage!
