Natural Australian Mintabie crystal opal rough weighing 22.2 carats. Old-stock Mintabie seam material showing bright blue, green, violet, and flashes of red color through translucent crystal structure with layered color bar formation and natural host rock still attached. This piece has the classic Mintabie crystal look collectors and cutters chase — glowing electric color sitting beneath a pale crystal seam with darker inclusions and natural layered structure throughout the stone. The color bar appears to carry through multiple directions, giving potential for a freeform stone, smaller calibrated cuts, or specimen display depending on how aggressively the material is worked. This stone came from an old-stock parcel reportedly held since the 1980s from a family mining stash, with much of the material remaining unworked until recently. Mintabie material has become increasingly difficult to source since the field closure, especially older untouched rough with visible color. Older Mintabie material can display natural inclusions, internal stress, fractures, or crazing typical of the field and should be handled accordingly during cutting. Total weight: 22.2 carats Origin: Mintabie, South Australia Type: Natural solid opal rough Quantity: 1 stone Photos taken damp and under bright lighting. Exact stone shown is the stone you will receive. From a larger parcel I’m currently working through — stones are sorted as I go, with select pieces kept for cutting and finished jewelry.
