Offered here is a text entitled: The Iceman Cometh, by Eugene O'Neill, published by The Limited Editions Club (NY) in 1987, Edition Limited to 2000 copies [this being #813], SIGNED by the artist, illustrated in b/w (with one original color lithograph) by Leonard Baskin, 7 1/4" x 11 1/2"; 153pp. Papered boards have very light wear/ minor spotting, former owner's embossed library stamp-- otherwise excellent internally; slipcase is very good (some scuffing). LEONARD BASKIN (1922 – 2000) was an American sculptor, draughtsman, and graphic artist, as well as founder of the Gehenna Press (1942–2000). One of America's first fine arts presses, it went on to become "one of the most important and comprehensive art presses of the world", often featuring the work of poets, such as Sylvia Plath, Ted Hughes, Anthony Hecht, and James Baldwin side by side with Baskin's bold, stark, energetic and often dramatic black-and-white prints. Called a "Sculptor of Stark Memorials" by the New York Times, Baskin is also known for his wood, limestone, bronze, and large-scale woodblock prints, which ranged from naturalistic to fanciful, and were frequently grotesque, featuring bloated figures or humans merging with animals. "His monumental bronze sculpture, The Funeral Cortege, graces the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C." The Iceman Cometh, tragedy in four acts by Eugene O’Neill, was written in 1939 and produced and published in 1946 and considered by many to be his finest work. The drama exposes the human need for illusion and hope as antidotes to the natural condition of despair.
