About Edmund Clarence Stedman Edmund Clarence Stedman (1833–1908), often called “the banker-poet,” was among the most influential figures in 19th-century American literature. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, and educated at Yale, he pursued a dual career almost unique in American letters: a respected member of the New York Stock Exchange from 1865 to 1900, he was simultaneously one of the nation’s leading poets and critics. As a critic he wrote the landmark surveys Victorian Poets (1875) and Poets of America (1885); as an anthologist he edited the eleven-volume A Library of American Literature and An American Anthology, 1787–1900, works that did much to define and elevate the study of American literature. An early and important champion of Walt Whitman and Edgar Allan Poe, he edited Poe’s collected works and was a central figure of New York’s literary clubs. On Stedman’s death, Mark Twain wrote that “as poet, critic, leader in all matters pertaining to the interests and honor of literature… his position was unique.” A Note on the Content This is the final leaf of a longer letter; the surviving text shows Stedman arranging to discuss some matter in person (“I will talk with you about it”), closing warmly above his full signature.
