Founded in Geneva in 1915 as Fabrique Genevoise de Crayons, the company adopted the name Caran d’Ache in 1924, inspired by the pseudonym of a French illustrator and the Russian word for pencil, "karandash." Caran d’Ache began producing fountain pens in the mid-20th century, with models like the Ecridor and Madison gaining popularity for their minimalist designs and durable construction. These pens are often celebrated for their hexagonal barrels, inspired by the company’s classic pencil shape, as well as for their use of noble materials such as silver, gold, lacquer, and even Chinese urushi techniques in high-end lines. While not as widely circulated as Japanese or German pens, Caran d’Ache fountain pens gained a reputation among connoisseurs for their smooth-writing gold and steel nibs, often made in-house or sourced from reputable European nib manufacturers. Their nibs are typically precise, stiff, and reliable, with a clean, elegant line suited for professional use. Throughout its history, Caran d’Ache has maintained limited but refined fountain pen offerings, focusing on quality over quantity. Their pens, made entirely in Switzerland, remain a symbol of understated luxury, and vintage models from the 1980s and 1990s are especially valued for their precision engineering, clean aesthetics, and rarity outside Europe. *CARAN D`ACHE Nib* The Caran d’Ache Fine size nib is crafted to embody Swiss precision and understated elegance. Whether in gold or stainless steel, the Fine nib is designed to produce a clean, narrow line, ideal for those who prefer precision in writing--particularly for note-taking, technical writing, or those with smaller handwriting. Known for their consistent ink flow and controlled feedback, Caran d’Ache Fine nibs tend to offer a crisp yet smooth writing experience, balancing a slight firmness with enough sensitivity to make everyday writing enjoyable. The nibs are generally tuned to European standards, so a Caran d’Ache Fine might feel a touch broader than Japanese counterparts, yet it maintains a strong sense of refinement. Caran d’Ache ensures high nib quality through strict in-house quality control, and each nib--whether mounted on a modern Leman, Varius, or vintage Ecridor model--reflects the brand’s legacy of discreet luxury and precise craftsmanship. *Condition* This pen's overall condition is good for a vintage fountain pen. There are no signs of rust on the clip, and the original filling system is still intact and does not require replacement. The cap and piston filler, if applicable, screw on and off smoothly without any difficulties. The nib color is vivid with limited to no scratches. Any hairline scratches are barely visible, and there are no cracks on the pen. The pen feels smooth, polished, and shiny. A Tier - Excellent Condition: This pen is in excellent condition with only minor flaws. There may be small chips on the nib, but no rust is present. Hairline scratches may be visible on the body, cap, and nib. The nib color remains consistent, although small scratches may be seen upon close inspection. The pen can be easily screwed on and off, and the filling system works properly. The original filling system is intact with no cracks on the body of the pen. The pen still feels smooth, polished, and shiny. B Tier - Good Condition: This pen is in good condition and is perfectly usable. It may have some rust on the clip and trim. The nib color may have changed due to weathering or ink stains. The filling system has been replaced with a new one, possibly because the original one had hardened over time and needed replacement. There are no cracks on the pen, but there may be hairline scratches present. C Tier - Fair Condition: This pen is in fair condition and is functional, but it has noticeable scratches on the body and cap. The trim may be rusted or chipped. Although there are no cracks, the filling system also requires replacement. The nib color may have changed, or the nib itself may have been re-polished. F Tier - Poor Condition: This pen is still writable, but it is cosmetically in a terrible state. A major refurbishment has been conducted to restore the pen to an acceptable condition, but in the process, many of its original characteristics have been lost. Please note that this item condition grade is based on general standards and may vary depending on the specific criteria and expectations of different collectors or sellers.
