With this first Orbis, which met January 7- 11, 1974, the Center for Theoretical Studies has inaugurated a new series of annual gather ings devoted to the natural sciences and to problems on the "interface" of science and society. This volume contains, in addition, a contribution by Behram Kursunoglu on the "Energy Black Hole", which was not actually presented during the Orbis. The content of the talks present~d ranged over a wide variety of topics in the fields of future energy needs and resources.
