A signed 1938 Limited Editions Club edition of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin — the anti-slavery novel that became one of the most influential American books of the 19th century — illustrated and signed by the Mexican modernist Miguel Covarrubias. This edition is illustrated with sixteen lithographs drawn directly on the stone by Covarrubias, with an introduction by Raymond Weaver, printed by John S. Fass at the Harbor Press, New York. One of just 1,500 copies made for members of the Limited Editions Club. This is copy number 1433, signed by the illustrator on the colophon page in red ink. Quarter red morocco binding over marbled boards, with gilt spine titling and raised bands. A note on the work: the Covarrubias illustrations reflect the visual conventions of their 1930s moment and include period caricature. Offered as a historically significant piece of fine-press and American literary history. Condition: Good to Very Good. The binding is sound and the gilt titling is bright. The spine leather shows rubbing and scuffing with light wear at the head and tail (see photos). Interior pages clean. Signature and lithographs present and crisp. Publisher's slipcase not included.
