Clarissa is the delightful youngest daughter of a thrusting nouveau riche family. Her brutal brother and sister bully her so insistently that it seems she must either marry the obnoxious Mr Solmes for his estate, or run away under the protection of the dashing and aristocratic Robert Lovelace. But Lovelace is a notorious rake: every woman is his prey, and his own love for Clarissa cannot overcome his lust for seduction. He believes that – her virginity gone – Clarissa will have no choice but to submit for ever. But he has reckoned without her strong sense of right, and what began as a battle of the sexes becomes an elemental struggle between Good and Evil. The book deals with the sexual and emotional desires of both men and women, it also gives an intimate and realistic portrait of mid-eighteenth century life.
