Notes and Fragments: Left by Walt Whitman and Now Edited by Richard Maurice Bucke, One of His Literary Editors Signed Limited Edition No. 56 of 225 Copies This is an original 1899 first edition of "Notes and Fragments: Left by Walt Whitman and Now Edited by Dr. Richard Maurice Bucke, One of His Literary Executors." This scarce volume was privately printed in London, Ontario, Canada, for Dr. Richard Maurice Bucke, one of Walt Whitman's closest friends, biographers, and literary executors. The edition was limited to just 225 numbered copies , each signed by Bucke. This copy is hand-numbered: No. 56, and bears Bucke's original signature on the limitation page. Following Walt Whitman's death in 1892, Dr. Richard Maurice Bucke inherited a substantial body of Whitman's unpublished papers, notes, manuscript fragments, and working materials. Bucke compiled and published these writings in this volume, providing scholars and collectors with an important glimpse into Whitman's creative process and the development of Leaves of Grass. Because the book was privately issued in such a small edition, it remains one of the scarcer Whitman publications and is sought after by collectors of American literature, poetry, and Whitmaniana. Dr. Richard Maurice Bucke (1837–1902) was a Canadian psychiatrist, author, and one of Walt Whitman's closest friends and literary advocates. He authored one of the earliest major biographies of Whitman and served as one of the poet's literary executors after Whitman's death. Bucke played a central role in preserving and publishing Whitman's unpublished writings.
