Working outward from Merleau-Ponty's celebrated essay "Eye and Mind," Johnson sets out to recover the idea of the beautiful within a philosophy of embodiment, where Desire, Love, and Beauty belong to the very fabric of the world that Merleau-Ponty called Flesh. Along the way Johnson brings Merleau-Ponty into conversation with Kant, Sartre, Heidegger, Nietzsche, Deleuze, and Lyotard, ending on the meeting point of the beautiful and the sublime. It's a work of serious Continental philosophy that keeps one foot in the visual arts throughout — equally at home in a phenomenology seminar and on an art-theory shelf.
