Gildea & Walker Aesthetic Japonesque Polychrome Mayfair Toothbrush Holder 1881 Dimensions: 5” Tall 4 ½” Widest Condition: Very good excepting chip on rim. See photo. Markings: Gildea & Walker Circular Logo Mayfair Potter with 1790 G & W Late Mayers What a lovely example of late 19th century design. The stylized flowers, made out of Japanese mons, clan symbols, with luscious leaves hang down from a wonderful grape jelly purple band in the Japanese style. The purple band repeats at the top with contrasting sunflower yellow bands. Then on the inside is this imaginary archaic turquois band, it almost looks Māori. This pattern checks all the boxes and was one of the first offered by Gildea & Walker, whose partnership only lasted 4 years until 1885. This is a toothbrush holder and unlike the many others that will be listed on eBay, this one looks like it would actually work, as it has drain holes inside and bottom vents to let the air in. A recent G W Turner version had none of this, thereby assuring that disgusting gunk will form in the bottom. A shame about the chip boo boo and that is reflected in the pricing. A scarce pattern from a very brief partnership.
