Royal Doulton Polychrome Eglinton Tournament Jug Creamer Gothic Revival 1903. It was funded and organized byArchibald, Earl of Eglinton, and took place atEglinton Castle inAyrshire. This jug is disastrous in it’s own way, the transfer printer apparently didn’t proof-read the transfers and Eglinton is mis-spelled as “Eglington”. The Eglinton Tournament of 1839 was a reenactment of medieval joust and revel held in North Ayrshire , Scotland between 28 and 30 August. It was funded and organized by Archibald, Earl of Eglinton , and took place at Eglinton Castle in Ayrshire . This should have been a glorious spectacle; however, it was held in Scotland, and late Summer is the rainy season. It was an unmitigated disaster - with torrents of rain turning the jousting fields and processional walkways into mud. The numerous nobles who had custom-made suits of armor found themselves sinking in the mud. The banquet tent built for the event seated 400 of the cream of British society regrettably leaked, and the Ball for 2,000 was ultimately cut short as the venue was being washed away by the torrents. I would have given anything to watch this and hope the Downton Abbey film producers will turn this into a series. This jug is disastrous in it’s own way, the transfer printer apparently didn’t proof-read the transfers and Eglinton is mis-spelled as “Eglington”. This is likely because one pronunciation variant includes this spelling. There’s a cemetery in NJ and a nature preserve in NV that are spelled Eglington. In any event it is a delightful little jug. For the knock down drag out best gothic revival jug based on this event, see Ridgway’s masterpiece: the last photo in this post.
