NEXT DAY SHIPPING This postcard features Emory Junior College at Valdosta , an all-male two-year school that operated in Valdosta, Georgia, from 1928 to 1953 . History of the College Founding: City leaders donated 43 acres and an endowment to Emory University to establish a men's division that would complement the existing Georgia State Woman's College. Architecture: The main building depicted is Pound Hall , recognizable by its grand white columns and distinctive clock tower. The "Death Knell": After World War II, enrollment spiked to nearly 250 students due to the G.I. Bill. However, when Georgia State Woman's College began admitting men in 1950 (becoming coeducational), Emory Junior College could no longer compete with the lower in-state tuition. Closure: The school officially closed in May 1953 with only 65 students remaining. The Campus Today The facilities were gifted to the University System of Georgia and are now part of Valdosta State University’s North Campus . Pound Hall: The original building shown in your postcard still stands on Pendleton Drive and currently houses the Harley Langdale Jr. College of Business Administration . Historical Markers: Two live oak trees planted near the school's founding, now known as "Emory at Valdosta East" and "Emory at Valdosta West," still grow outside Pound Hall as a living tribute to the college's legacy.
