Published in 1940 (Showa 15) by the prestigious publisher Iwanami Shoten, this volume offers a profound comparative exploration of both Eastern and Western painting traditions. It covers diverse subjects ranging from classical Japanese, Chinese, and Korean landscape arts to Persian, Indian, and European masterpieces, including insights on Western artists like Francisco Goya and Ignacio Zuloaga. Beyond geographical comparisons, the text provides a fascinating psychological analysis of art appreciation, examining the creative process, the development of nude paintings, the relationship between poetry and art, and traditional Japanese themes such as female ghosts in Noh theater. This makes it an incredibly rich resource for understanding mid-20th-century Japanese scholarly perspectives on global art history. This vintage volume comes complete with its original protective cardboard slipcase (which shows some age-related tanning and contains a previous collector's ownership stamp). The interior pages are intact and in good readable condition for its age, making it an exceptional addition to any collection of Asian art history, aesthetics, or pre-war Japanese publications.
