His father, Leopold Damrosch, was a conductor. Frank studied music in Europe, then returned to America to lead choirs. In 1892, he became conductor of the Oratorio Society of New York. His performances of Messiah and Missa Solemnis won praise. One critic wrote, “Damrosch brings music to life.” In 1897, he improved music education in New York City schools. He believed every child should learn music. In 1905, he founded the Institute of Musical Art, later Juilliard. His school trained many great musicians. He also conducted the New York Symphony Orchestra. He introduced audiences to composers like Wagner and Brahms. His concerts were praised for their energy. A journalist wrote, “Damrosch’s music fills the hall with beauty and power.”
