Known in Welsh as Y Ddraig Goch meaning The Red Dragon the flag draws on one of the oldest and most deeply rooted national symbols in European history — the red dragon of Wales has been associated with Welsh identity since at least the early medieval era appearing in the legendary history of King Arthur and the Mabinogion and referenced in Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae as the symbol of the ancient Britons who resisted Saxon invasion. The red dragon itself is rooted in the legend of Merlin and the two fighting dragons — one red and one white — whose underground battle caused Vortigern's tower to collapse and whose outcome Merlin prophesied would determine the fate of Britain. The red dragon's victory over the white dragon represented the eventual triumph of the Britons and their Celtic descendants the Welsh over their Saxon and Norman conquerors — a prophecy that has fueled Welsh national identity and resistance for over a thousand years. The green and white horizontal stripes represent the House of Tudor — the Welsh royal dynasty that produced Henry VII and Henry VIII and ruled England from 1485 to 1603 — giving Wales a unique and powerful claim on English royal history that is reflected in the flag's colors. The Welsh flag is widely considered by vexillologists and flag design experts to be one of the greatest national flag designs in the world — the dramatic red dragon rampant on a split field is bold, immediately recognizable, and utterly unlike any other national flag. It is also one of the most searched and purchased flags in the United Kingdom and among the Welsh diaspora worldwide. Whether you're Welsh, a lover of Celtic and British history, a dragon enthusiast, a rugby fan cheering on the Welsh national team, or simply someone who recognizes a spectacular flag design, this is a high quality flag built to fly proudly in all weather conditions.
