1921 Handwritten Journal St. Mary's Catholic High School Chicago GREAT Art Work. “In 1921, Saint Mary's High School in Chicago was an established all-girls Catholic academy founded in 1899 by the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVMs). There’s so much history behind this all girls school, way too much to put here but…. WELCOME TO SALLY’S DIARIES: Before I get started describing this piece, I want to let you know that I have a podcast. It was a privileged and blessing to be able to share what I’ve learned in the last 36 years. And with all that said…… Up for auction today is an historical 1921 journal that originally belonged to young woman,Virginia Shay, who was attending St. Mary’s High School in Chicago Illinois. As you can see on the front it’s titled, “From Day to Day at School.” There’s so much history behind this all girls school, way too much to put here but…. “In 1921, Saint Mary's High School in Chicago was an established all-girls Catholic academy founded in 1899 by the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVMs). Located at 2044 W. Grenshaw St., it was recognized as the first central, independent girls' high school built and operated by a community of nuns in Chicago.” NOTE: The photo you see above showing the school is just one I copied off the web. Virginia used the journal for her classmates to sign and some of them also drew some amazing works of art. There are 37 pages of handwritten sentiments and 8 paintings/drawings. There was also an original ticket to a play the school gave, titled, “Seven Miles to Arden.” The journal is too big to fully fit on my scanner and that’s why the pages look cut off in some of the photos above. Seven pages in the middle have “Please do not use” written on them. Cain, Rose D. Fieldmann, Mercedes Cary, May Murphy, Agnes Byrns, Evelyn O’Rielly, and more. As far as the condition, it’s fair to poor. As you can see the cover is quite stained, spine a bit loose, and there a good deal of foxing. I believe it might have been stored in a damp place because in the back on the inside covers there’s stains as if it were wet at some time. And then some of the paintings or drawings have rubbed off on the opposite pages. You can see a lot of what I’m talking about in the scans above. Buy as is. The journal measures about 6” x 0”.
