After his retirement from the Navy he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study writing. *The Sand Pebbles* was the 1963 Harper Prize novel chosen by Louis Auchincloss, Philip Roth, and Elizabeth Janeway. McKenna died soon afterwards in 1964. It was the basis for the excellent Robert Wise film featuring Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, Richard Crenna, and Candice Bergen in her second film.
