The cover has U.S. #26 George Washington stamp that is postmarked HYATTSVILLE MD. On the verso note the pen marks as to suggest "stitches". We can safely say war sucks! Excerpt from Bayonne by Kathleen Middleton, page 17 21st New Jersey Infantry Regiment The 21st New Jersey Infantry Regiment lost 1 officer and 20 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded and 1 officer and 30 enlisted men to disease during the Civil War. 1862 The regiment was organized at Trenton, New Jersey under Colonel Gilliam Van Houten September 15 The regiment mustered in for nine months Federal service. September 16 Left State for Washington, D.C. September 18 Moved to Frederick, Maryland and Joined Army of the Potomac on battlefield of Antietam, Maryland. Attached to 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 6th Corps, Army of the Potomac September-October Duty at Hagerstown, Md., and guard duty at Dam No. 5 October 29-November 19 Movement to Falmouth, Virginia. December 11-15 Battle of Fredericksburg December 11 Covered laying of pontoons and Bowling Green Road in support of Weirs’ Maryland Battery. 1863 January 20-24 “Mud March” January-April Duty near White Oak Church and constructing corduroy road below Fredericksburg April 27-May 6 Chancellorsville Campaign April 29-May 2 Operations at Franklin’s Crossing May 3 Battle of Maryes Heights, (Second Battle of Fredericksburg) May 3-4 Salem Heights May 4 Banks’ Ford The regiment was on the left flank of the Union line, attacked by Early’s division in an hour and a half of severe fighting. Colonel Van Houten was mortally wounded and captured. June 19 The 21st New Jersey Infantry Regiment was mustered out at Trenton, New Jersey.
