EDWIN ABBEY ALFRED PARSONS OLD SONGS FREDERIC TELLANDER SIGNED EX LIBRIS 1889. He was a largely self-taught artist, who achieved national acclaim for his paintings during the 1920s and '30s. He is best known for his triumphant views of both Paris and Chicago. His work can be found in the collections of the Union League Club of Chicago and the Illinois State Museum, among others. Very good condition, pages and illustrations excellent (pg 47 has small paper loss LR corner not affecting illustration or text), some loss to spine, binding frayed at front end-papers. Many lovely illustrations by Abbey with floral designs by Parsons. Considered to be one of Abbey's finest illustrated works. A beautiful volume. Provenance - the book was discovered c 1976 in a collection at Tree Studios, Chicago (built 1894, National Register Historic Places, 1974). This book was owned by noted Chicago painter and illustrator Frederic Tellander (1878-1977) - (see pics of his signature and personal bookplate). A gallery bio of Tellander: Frederic Tellander was born in Paxton Illinois in 1878. He was a largely self-taught artist, who achieved national acclaim for his paintings during the 1920s and '30s. While recognized as an important Chicago artist, he traveled abroad and frequently painted in Paris between the wars. He is best known for his triumphant views of both Paris and Chicago. Tellander also painted as a commercial artist and completed numerous print advertisements for the Studebaker Corporation, especially those created during WWII featuring the B-17 bomber, the "Flying Fortress". He exhibited at the annual exhibitions of the Art Institute of Chicago 93 times between 1910-1941, winning numerous prizes. His work can be found in the collections of the Union League Club of Chicago and the Illinois State Museum, among others. Tellander died in Elkhart, IN at the age of 99 in 1977. (see images of his art) The book was originally purchased from Silberman & Sayers Book and Art Shop (est. 1921), about four blocks from Tree Studios (see pic of store tag), where Tellander may have resided or worked at some point.
