Original EXCLUSIVE TO MGM RENO RESTAURANT 11" X 14" Photo JEAN HARLOW. When the MGM Grand Reno opened on May 3, 1978 everyone showed up. A large outdoor amphitheater was constructed. When the MGM Grand Reno opened on May 3, 1978 everyone showed up. It was always sort of a spectacle when MGM built a new hotel, all three national television networks were there along with VIP and celebrity dignitaries. People gawked at this hotel and the image of Reno was turned dramatically, for a short time. In 1985, Kerkorian walked away from his MGM's in Las Vegas and Reno selling them to Chicago based Bally Manufacturing Corporation who renamed the hotels Bally's, the company already had owned the most successful hotel in Atlantic City and as a result of this transaction, Kerkorian retained the rights to the MGM name and brand, he detached himself from the MGM movie industry earlier. Bally's Reno was never a real performer and so as a result, and Bally's own financial problems back at headquarters it was put up for sale of which two major companies bid. Harveys bid the most first, but Hilton came in and swept their bid, winning the hotel in 1992. Right after that, the Bally's name disappeared from the hotel and it was re-branded the Reno Hilton, Reno already had a Reno Hilton and it was Downtown, so Hilton just renovated the hotel and applied their Flamingo brand to it to separate it from the new Reno Hilton out of the former Bally's. In 1995/96, the hotel underwent a massive transformation, the casino was renovated but original chandeliers were kept intact, the hotel was given a "modern west" theme and all hotel rooms were renovated at this time as well. A large outdoor amphitheater was constructed. Restaurants were renovated as were convention facilities, the exterior changed as well, the signature sandstone colors were erased and replaced with white and red accents and gold colored tint on the windows. The Reno Hilton became profitable once again and became a top performer for the company. IN THE STORY ABOVE IT SAYS THE CASINO WAS RENOVATED BY HILTON IN 1995/96, THAT WAS MORE LIKE WHEN IT WAS COMPLETED, I BOUGHT THESE IN 1994/95 WHILE RENOVATION WAS GOING ON. EVEN THOUGH BALLY'S OWNED THE HOTEL/CASINO IT THEY NEVER CHANGED THE MGM THEME. THE INTERIOR REMAINED THE MGM THEME UNTIL HILTON BOUGHT IT. THEY WERE RENOVATING IN STAGES, 10 FLOORS AT A TIME, THE RESTAURANT AND OTHER RETAIL STORES AND OTHER ROOMS LAST. THE PICTURES MGM TOLD ME WERE MADE FROM NEGATIVES IN THEIR ARCHIVES, THEY WERE USED AT NO OTHER TIME. I HAVE SEEN PHOTOS FROM THE SAME SHOOTING BUT SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT. THEY WERE PROBABLY TAKEN BY A FAMOUS PHOTOGRAPHER, IF ANYONE RECOGNIZES WHO PLEASE LET ME KNOW I HAVE ALSO SEEN ON EBAY THAT SOMEONE THAT BOUGHT AN ORIGINAL FROM ME IN THE PAST HAVE MADE 8" X 10" REPRINTS. IT SAYS IN THE STORY ABOVE THAT THE CHANDELIERS WERE NOT REMOVED, IT SHOULD HAVE SAID THE HUGE MASSIVE CHANDELIERS WERE NOT TAKEN DON. THE SMALLER 3-5 FOOT ONES WERE TAKEN DOWN AND I BOUGHT SEVERAL OF THEM. ALSO I BOUGHT SOME REPRINT POSTERS IN FRAMES, SOME MIRRORS WITH THE WIZARD OF OZ AND SINGING IN THE RAIN DESIGNED INTO THEM, THERE WERE HUNDREDS OF THEM. I ALSO BOUGHT SOME OF THE CARPET, SEE PIC BELOW. THESE PHOTOS WERE ALSO MADE INTO 24" X 36" PHOTOS (NOT POSTERS) AND WERE HUNG IN THE HALLWAYS OF THE HOTEL. THE ELVIS AND FRANK SINATRA ONES WERE TAKEN DOWN SO OFTEN BY GUESTS TRYING TO STEAL THEM THAT THE HOTEL DID NOT PUT THEM BACK UP, I DID MANAGE TO GET 2 SINATRA LARGE ONES. THESE RESTAURANT ONLY HAD THE 11" X 14"s OF THE BIGGEST STARS. I BELIEVE THERE WAS ONLY 7 OF EACH OF THESE PHOTOS MADE, I BOUGHT THEM ALL BEFORE THE RESTAURANT CLOSED FOR RENOVATION, I THINK THE GIFT SHOP HAD TAKEN A COUPLE DOWN BEFORE I MADE MY BID ON THEM. THERE WERE 7 ELVIS PHOTOS AND THEY WERE STOLEN AFTER THE RESTAURANT WAS SHUT DOWN AND I DID NOT RECEIVE THEM. I WAS FURIOUS. THEY DID MAKE IT UP TO ME IN MERCHANDISE BUT NOTHING COULD REPLACE THE ELVIS PHOTOS. I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHERE THEY ARE. LIKE THIS PHOTO THERE WERE ONLY 7 EVER MADE I SOLD SOME OF THE BIGGER 24' X 36" PHOTOS THROUGH BUTTERFIELD AUCTIONS AND THE LITTLE ONES AT SHOWS AND IN MY STORE. SOME ARE IN THEIR ORIGINAL FRAMES WITH GLASS AND SOME ARE NOT, THE FRAMES WERE PUT ON THE WALL WITH EPOXY TO KEEP PEOPLE FROM STEALING THEM AND THE FRAMES CAME APART WHEN THEY WERE BEING TAKEN DOWN FROM THE WALLS. SHIPPING A FRAMED ONE WILL BE $25 AND OUT OF THE FRAME $10. THE PHOTOS ARE NEAR MINT UNLESS NOTED, THERE IS THE TINIEST BIT OF YELLOWING TO THEM PROBABLY FROM CIGARETTE SMOKE GETTING IN, THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN REALLY NOTICE IT IS TO TAKE OFF THE MATTING AND IT IS BARELY NOTICEABLE. THEY ARE ALL APPROXIMATELY 11" X 14" SOME WERE TRIMMED TO CENTER THE PERSON IN THE FRAME, THE FRAMES ARE 12" X 18" AND MATTING IS 2 INCHES, THE FRAMES NEED TO BE TOUCHED UP WITH BLACK PAINT OR LEFT AS IS FOR THE INTRINSIC VALUE.
