Description
FROM OUR PRIVATE COLLECTION: A Victorian Monmouthshire Regiment 4th VB full dress cross belt and Morocco leather pouch set featuring a full-breasted sphinx lying on a rope above the "Egypt" inscribed tablet, circa 1898-1908. The belt features a silver brocade with a central red stripe. Although this exact dress piece is new to the internet (thus the rarity description), we have settled with the description provided by Churchill's "History Of The British Infantry Collar Badge" which illustrates a Monmouthshire Volunteer Unit sphinx badge (with an extremely similar design). The difference in Churchill's description is the "Egypt" inscription which was later added for the 4th VB in 1898 (later The 3rd BN Monmouthshire Regiment in 1908). There has been other cross belts sold in the past but none were from the Egypt occupancy period. This sale would appear be the first ever sale of this item on the internet. Condition: Minor loss and weathering to the leather. Loose stud which connects the leather strap. The brocade has become lifted from the leather in some areas. Excellent condition considering the age and purpose of the item. Measurements: 18.5" long and 7.5" wide. All measurements are taken to the nearest half inch.
