From the dust jacket description: Over forty years ago, Milton Avery painted an arresting and inviting series of paintings featuring winged pigs, whiskered caterpillars, and some pretty ferocious wolves, with the intent of publishing them in a children’s book. But the original text was lost, the paintings were laid aside, and years passed. Then the Avery family presented the pictures to Karla Kuskin, and asked her to write a story to accompany them. Without changing the original order of Mr. Avery’s images, Ms. Kuskin “found” an enchanting tale about a boy named Paul, who wants to visit his magic grandmother but doesn’t know the way. He sets off on a fanciful journey, characterized by a lovely free-floating riffs in the shape of songs and childlike leaps of imagination and faith.
