From Wikipedia: Clyde Robert Bulla (born January 9, 1914, near King City, Missouri, United States, died May 23, 2007, Warrensburg, Missouri) was the author of over fifty books for children. He received his early education in a one-room schoolhouse where he began writing stories and songs. He finished his first book shortly after his graduation from high school and then went to work on a newspaper as a columnist and a typesetter. His first book, The Donkey Cart, was published in 1946. His autobiography, A Grain of Wheat: A Writer Begins, was published in 1985. The book referred to an essay he wrote in 1924 for the St. Joseph Gazette in which he tied with 100 others for third-place to write about a grain of wheat. Leonard Joseph Weisgard (December 13, 1916 – January 14, 2000) was an American writer and illustrator of more than 200 children's books. He is known best for his collaborations with writer Margaret Wise Brown. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and spent most of his childhood in England. Weisgard studied art at the Pratt Institute in New York City. His first book, Suki the Siamese Pussy, was published in 1937, and his first collaboration with Brown was two years later, The Noisy Book. He won the 1948 Caldecott Medal for U.S. picture book illustration, recognizing The Little Island, written by Brown. They collaborated again on The Important Book, published by Harper & Brothers in 1949. Altogether, Weisgard illustrated at least 14 of Brown's books, including two that were published posthumously. (Brown wrote the text for six books that were published as by "Golden MacDonald”. All were unpaged picture books illustrated by Weisgard and published by Doubleday.) Writer Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings was a Newbery Medal runner-up in 1956 for The Secret River, which Weisgard illustrated. He died on January 14, 2000, in Denmark. From the dust jacket description: When Luke Vail rescued a baby in a cradle floating down the river in a flood, it changed his whole life. Eventually the boy, John Thomas, and Luke lived alone in Half-Moon Valley. It was a harsh kind of solitude in the Tennessee country in the early 1800’s, but Like wanted it that way. He taught John Thomas how to read, and they read the only book they had—the Bible—and they shunned the overtures of the men passing through the country. While yearning for more warmth and companionship than he had, John Thomas found a wounded white crow and against Luke’s wishes kept it and nursed it back to health. When the bird disappeared, John Thomas ran away in search of him and found a whole new life beyond the valley he had called home. Mr. Bulla’s simple style gives a legendary quality to this poignant story of a lonely boy who not only discovered a new and different world beyond the valley but also found the meaning of love.
