The Codex Mendoza is a manuscript dating back to the 16th century that provides a detailed account of the history, society, and tribute system of the Aztec Empire in Mexico. It is named after Antonio de Mendoza, the viceroy of New Spain, who commissioned the codex in the 1540s. The Codex Mendoza consists of pictorial images accompanied by Spanish and Nahuatl (Aztec language) text, documenting various aspects of Aztec life, such as the founding of Tenochtitlan (present-day Mexico City), the reigns of Aztec rulers, and the tribute paid by different provinces to the Aztec Empire. The codex is an important historical and cultural artifact that offers valuable insights into the Aztec civilization before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors The Aztec Codex Mendoza was prepared on the authority of the first Viceroy of New Spain. Its intended recipient was the emperor Charles V. Specially written by an Aztec painted book artist (a 'tlacuilo'), using the native pictographic form of writing, its purpose was to allow the monarch to get a view of what his strange new dominions were like. It depicts a host of customs, rites and everyday objects, and notes on a vast number of signs and glyphs. It was sent to Europe on completion but never reached its intended reader, and over a century later it ended up at the Bodleian Library in Oxford where it remains today.
